website IN FOCUS – Vivian Maier

http://vivianmaier.blogspot.com/

This website was created by John Maloof in dedication to the photographer Vivian Maier, a street photographer from the 1950s - 1990s. Vivian's work was discovered at an auction in Chicago where she resided most of her life just before her death in 2009. Her discovered work includes over 100,000 mostly medium format negatives, thousands of prints, and countless undeveloped rolls of film.

Vivian Maier was an outstanding, previously unknown 20th century photographer of the highest order. Check out the website to see many of her images and read more about her.

Her astonishing story and some of her pictures were featured in the Sunday Times magazine Spectrum section this weekend. Her work will also appear in London in July during the London Street Photography Festival.

Les explains, “The place is Hardwick Park near Sedgefield and this is the Mausoleum. Behind me is the new lake and it’s full of swans, ducks, gulls and even Greater Crested Grebes are there. For anyone who hasn't been it’s a photographer’s paradise. It was a perfect setting for my new, carry around Canon SX120is compact ... now I don't miss a thing”.

COMPETITION COUNTDOWN: ONWARDS TO THE TRIO

SIX TROPHIES TO BE WON OVER TWO RESULTS NIGHTS

With the first of the three Progress competition entries hot-footing it to the judges, it’s time to turn our attention to the exciting Trio. And the good news is there is both a digital projection and a print version and three separate competitions in each:

The Dunelm and Des Kelly Trophies: landscape or architectural taken within 2 mile of Durham Market Place

The Leazes Bowl and Lambert Hedley Trophy: for digital and print portrait of the year

The Sterling Awards (Print and Digital): for imagination and innovation, either in concept, technique or presentation

There can be a maximum of 6 entries in both Trio projected images and Trio prints and a maximum of three in any one competition. It sounds complicated but the spread could be 3:3:0 or 2:2:2 or 3:2:1

Please read the rules in your programme carefully including General Competition rules on page 8

Closing dates are 17th February for the Trio Projected Images and 10th March for the Trio Prints. Get your entries in and look forward to two of the best (results) nights of the year.

FILLINGHAM TROPHY – SET SUBJECT JUXTAPOSITION

The closing date is not until 12th May but you have to interpret the subject and take the pictures! Already we are seeing potential Juxtaposition images at the Assignment reviews. The competition will be hot!

Check your own dictionary but here is one definition:

juxtaposition is an act or instance of placing two things close together or side by side, in order to show unlikeness or differences, to note the opposite qualities of the two

Thursday 27 January 2011 to Saturday 26 March 2011

Henryk Ross returned to Lodz in 1940, having fought with the defeated Polish army against the invading German forces. As a Jew he was forced to move into the Lodz ghetto. As a photographer he was employed by the Jewish administration’s Department of Statistics, taking the official propaganda pictures and the thousands of identification photographs required by the Nazis. He also began to document the ghetto. “The conditions for taking photographs were extremely difficult,” he recalled. “The photographic materials were smuggled to me in exchange for bread, of which I had far too little.” In simply taking these pictures he risked his life. When the German authorities moved to liquidate the Lodz ghetto in 1944, he buried his negatives and, one of the few who managed to escape, he returned to reclaim them. In his lifetime Ross only published photographs that supported the accepted narrative, but he catalogued his whole collection before he died in 1991.

NEWS REPORT: NEW NCPF WEBSITE

The website of the Northern Counties Photographic Federation has been completely redesigned. Durham Photographic Society is, of course, a member club. A panorama picture of Durham Cathedral by John Attle has been chosen to represent the Wear Area on the home page.

The site has been very well designed and contains a great deal of interest to club members, for instance on competitions and the Northern Counties International Salon, and more. Among many features is one called Knowledge Base which will build over time and at the moment contains the following:

Photographic Organisations
To both new and to many established members the plethora of acronyms often referred to by more experienced members is a mystery. This file attempts to dispel those mysteries.

Distinctions
Information about the various photographic distinctions available from the major national and international organisations and also provides useful links for more detailed information.

Technical Standards for PDI Competitions
Information from the PAGB about the standards they have adopted in their competitions and which might be of assistance to you or your club in organising its own competitions.

Plagiarism
An interesting article, reproduced by kind permission of its author, Christine Widdall AFIAP, DPAGB, BPE3* on a subject that has caused discussion for some time now.

FIAP and PSA Definitions
These are the definitions that these two organisations apply to Exhibitions and Salons that they sponsor.  They cover Monochrome, Nature, Photo-Travel and Photo-Journalism.
