LUMIERE FESTIVAL

Getting ready to glow

The City is buzzing with construction work taking place in preparation for the fabulous Lumiere Festival in Durham, last seen in 2009. This year’s festival runs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th November, 6.00 to 11.00 p.m. each evening. It will feature a fire garden in and around Durham Cathedral, an equestrian snowdome in Market Square, Ove Arup's favourite bridge turned into a waterfall: a city transformed by the art of light.

There will be a whole range of installations, talks and events. The festival guide can be picked up in the Town Hall, Market Place (check out the DPS exhibition, “Autumn” while you are there) and other outlets. Also on line here:

Remember it will be extremely busy (the reason we had to cancel our club night meeting on Thursday) and you will need to plan travel and parking carefully. Some useful general tips are here:

PHOTOGRAPHY: there will be opportunities galore. We have also received a couple of requests for pictures:

Marcia at St Cuthbert’s Hospice would love to have some good Lumiere images of Durham for the St Cuthbert’s Hospice 2013 calendar and Christmas cards.

Lewis Wilkinson, secretary for a local youth street band called jazz in my pants, who will be playing in the opening ceremony of Durham's Lumiere festival on Thursday 17th November was wondering if anyone from the society would like to take photos of the band, who will be marching from the Gala Theatre to Durham Cathedral in full costume, starting at 6:00pm.

These are two good causes that would benefit from our support. Tony G has the contact details.
