NEWS REPORT 18th June 2010

STEETLEY MAGNASITE WORKS

Sadly for photographers, this massive, near derelict industrial heritage site near the Hartlepool Headland now has 24 hour security preventing access to most of the site. Even the amazing pipeline structure that once pumped seawater into the plant (for many years, magnesium was extracted from the water) has been severed at the landward end preventing pedestrian access.

There is still some potential for photography and of course the coalfield coast beach area is still open in all its amazing beauty. You will find the security people friendly and they will explain exactly where you can and cannot go.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the major work of demolition starts in August. The site will ultimately be turned to luxury housing though a large part to the north will be retained as a nature conservation area.
