Joe Grabham Reports
It’s an annual event that is eagerly anticipated by club photographers from all over Britain – the PAGB Inter-club PDI Championship, which was held at Warwick University on Saturday 14th July. The two top clubs from each of the PAGB’s federations made it to the final (Durham and Sunderland were the NCPF representatives) and they were joined by last year’s eight finalists, making 38 clubs in total.
The Championship is always a convivial and good-humoured affair, but there is also a highly competitive edge because, of course, everyone wants to do well. This is exactly what we did (at least to begin with) when, after the first round, we found ourselves at the dizzy heights of thirteenth! However, the second round did not go so well and we missed the cut for the final by some margin, which meant we were destined for the Plate Competition with the other non-finalists. Here we finished with a very creditable tenth place, while in the main event the marvellous Wigan 10 pulled off yet another victory ahead of Smethwick and Amersham.
Individual high-spots for us were a top mark of 15 for John Wise with “Great Blue Heron at Nesting Time” and 14s for Ian Stafford (“Happiness Is”) and Neil Maughan (“Morning Cuppa”).
The overall standard of photography was outstanding and we should not be too disappointed with our showing in a contest featuring the best of the best. On the day, we finished among the top twenty clubs in the country - and that’s something to congratulate ourselves on!
