Yes, Tony Benn, dubbed Godfather of the Gala by DMA President David Hopper, is in Durham tonight and will be attending his 51st consecutive Big Meeting tomorrow. He was at the Gala cinema for a BRASS Durham International Festival screening of a preview of the documentary film being made about his life called Will and Testament. There was a question and answer session in which the 87 year old was on top form. The film was both powerful and moving and the finished version will be released in the Spring of 2013.
Incidentally, in spectacular scenes in the film of banners being carried through the cathedral in 2011, you can clearly see two Durham PS photographers quietly in action. It reminds us that generations of members over 60 years or more have photographed this event.
Members out and a about on the day may want to meet and photograph Mr Benn. He is expected to appear on the balcony of the County Hotel at some point, possibly with the banner featuring himself with the pipe going the wrong way, and up at the cathedral for the banner dedications but not on the Racecourse. This may change on the day! Hopefully he will be back next year but members may well like to take the opportunity to photograph extensively someone who is widely considered to be a national treasure while we can.
