Olympic Torch bearer, Ken Allday, who is a fund-raising ambassador for St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham, bought along his Olympic torch to the Hospice’s summer Picnic in the Park on Saturday. He spent the whole time chatting to the visitors and staff who could have their picture taken with the torch for a modest sum in aid of the Hospice. Durham PS member David Langley was on hand to take the pictures and a considerable sum was raised. David also volunteers his photographic expertise and his time to the Butterwick Hospice in his home town of Bishop Auckland. David said, “It’s a great way to meet wonderful people and practice your photography at the same time”.

Steetley Chimney to be demolished Sunday 29th July
With the Steetley Magnasite works demolition nearing completion, the famous landmark chimney near Hartlepool will be blown up at approximately 11.00 am on Sunday 29th July. The exact time depends on train traffic on the nearby railway. There will be a 200 metre or so exclusion zone north and south of the site extending from the railway to the sea. The Old Cemetery road area will be a popular parking and viewing area with collectors for charity and possibly old-timers who once worked at the works being amongst the crowds. Canny photographers may try and shoot with long lenses from the Headland so as to have the context of houses in view, from the northern perimeter of the site or from boats at sea.
http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/news/local/steetley-chimney-countdown-begins-1-4767778
The chimney is a magnificent and beautiful structure that will be greatly missed. There are thrilling Youtube clips to be seen of daring adventurers climbing up the inside and incredible views from the top. Just Google to find. Meantime, here’s an amazing link from 28 DL that shows how it was, soon to be no more:

Jack Bamford DPAGB APAGB AFIAP gave a highly regarded talk to Durham PS 19th July 2012. Here is an extract of a review by John Cogan:
“You could tell he was an engineer just by the way he revels in every eclectic detail that captures his eye. There is a love of the intricacies of things. Even within the vast landscapes there is a still moment, and an attention to the detail: the crazy, abstract Moorcroft-pottery style of lines at Yellowstone; the white trees in a bleached landscape. But these are as much an exercise in colour and shape as expositions of land formation and the geological underpinnings of a geographic area. Jack betrays himself as much as a Colourist in the Glasgow Boys’ tradition as a photographer in the Ansel Adams’s style.”

Angy Ellis reports:
Joanne Gray & I were asked to represent Durham Photographic Society at the weekend to photograph the unveiling of the Durham Light Infantry Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire in the presence of HRH The Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy KG GCVO Royal Colonel 3rd Battalion, The Rifles .
Like Cagney & Lacy we travelled together sharing thoughts and plans how we were going to cover an event so large with one Nikon & one Canon to support us. But we did and we did it very well if I say so myself.
We arrived at the George Hotel, touching base with Col Charlton who gave us full press access which we were extremely grateful for, and a rundown of the next day’s events.
That night was also the ‘Salamanca Supper’ in the hotel, so being the nice girls we are our services were offered to document this also. It was after Midnight when the last song ‘The Blaydon races’ finished off a grand night and we could finally go to bed.
Sunday morning we arrived early at the Arboretum springing straight into action. We covered the Band, the hundreds of DLI Association members & their families, three very friendly Chelsea Pensioners, the Royal arrival, meet & greets and finally the very moving ceremony.
The memorial is a larger-than-life statue of a DLI bugler dressed in the combat uniform of the Korean War.
It was modelled in clay by sculptor Alan Herriot, in Howgate, near Edinburgh, and was based on a photograph of the then 18-year-old Colour Sergeant Brandon Mulvey, of Chester-le-Street . Also present yesterday was Captain Tony Lynn, who designed the plinth of Portland stone and drew up the first draft sketches of the statue
Fundraising is now getting under way for a duplicate statue to be erected in Durham City.
Other dignitaries present were the Co Durham Lord-Lieutenant Sir Paul Nicholson, Honorary Colonel for The Rifles in County Durham James Ramsbotham, Durham City Mayor Councillor John Wilkinson, and Durham County Council chairwoman Councillor Linda Marshall.

Members Digital AV Night
The excitement builds as we eagerly await the final club night before our August break!
The content has been as well shrouded in secrecy as London Olympic 2012 opening night. We do hear that Mavis Ord, the Durham Doyenne of digital photography is leading from the front. Award winning Jack Gilmore has been working on his project secretly for weeks. And with the advent of SLR movie making capability, will anyone be incorporating video clips? Only one way to find out. Don’t miss it!

Joe Grabham Reports
It’s an annual event that is eagerly anticipated by club photographers from all over Britain – the PAGB Inter-club PDI Championship, which was held at Warwick University on Saturday 14th July. The two top clubs from each of the PAGB’s federations made it to the final (Durham and Sunderland were the NCPF representatives) and they were joined by last year’s eight finalists, making 38 clubs in total.
The Championship is always a convivial and good-humoured affair, but there is also a highly competitive edge because, of course, everyone wants to do well. This is exactly what we did (at least to begin with) when, after the first round, we found ourselves at the dizzy heights of thirteenth! However, the second round did not go so well and we missed the cut for the final by some margin, which meant we were destined for the Plate Competition with the other non-finalists. Here we finished with a very creditable tenth place, while in the main event the marvellous Wigan 10 pulled off yet another victory ahead of Smethwick and Amersham.
Individual high-spots for us were a top mark of 15 for John Wise with “Great Blue Heron at Nesting Time” and 14s for Ian Stafford (“Happiness Is”) and Neil Maughan (“Morning Cuppa”).
The overall standard of photography was outstanding and we should not be too disappointed with our showing in a contest featuring the best of the best. On the day, we finished among the top twenty clubs in the country - and that’s something to congratulate ourselves on!

Helen gave an outstanding talk to Durham Photographic Society 14th June 2012
Here is an extract from John Cogan’s review.
“In Helen’s work there are recurring motifs that enchant us with a sense of the familiar, those revisited trees and hills and lakes that never palls... trees in the landscape, especially the single tree standing alone, (a metaphor for the lone artist or the human condition, perhaps?). On a practical level what that single tree does do is to emphasise the nature of the rest of the image... the ruggedness of Glen Coe or the rough embrace of Crummock Water. Every image that was modestly placed before us was an object lesson in composition and tone. Moody daughters notwithstanding, the anthology became a procession of simple images that, as is the nature of a simple image, were deceptive in their true content. Nothing is simple in Helen’s world. She may profess to the simple and claim that she was forced to work this way by the Hasselblad, as if this Swedish “monster” could, or would, demand such obsequiousness from her. NO! Helen forced the camera to her will and to “speak” the voice that she had discovered.”
The full, fascinating story can be found in Articles on the DPS website: http://www.d-p-s.org.uk/pdf_docs/HelenHerbert_JohnCogan.pdf

Yes, Tony Benn, dubbed Godfather of the Gala by DMA President David Hopper, is in Durham tonight and will be attending his 51st consecutive Big Meeting tomorrow. He was at the Gala cinema for a BRASS Durham International Festival screening of a preview of the documentary film being made about his life called Will and Testament. There was a question and answer session in which the 87 year old was on top form. The film was both powerful and moving and the finished version will be released in the Spring of 2013.
Incidentally, in spectacular scenes in the film of banners being carried through the cathedral in 2011, you can clearly see two Durham PS photographers quietly in action. It reminds us that generations of members over 60 years or more have photographed this event.
Members out and a about on the day may want to meet and photograph Mr Benn. He is expected to appear on the balcony of the County Hotel at some point, possibly with the banner featuring himself with the pipe going the wrong way, and up at the cathedral for the banner dedications but not on the Racecourse. This may change on the day! Hopefully he will be back next year but members may well like to take the opportunity to photograph extensively someone who is widely considered to be a national treasure while we can.

D Company the Rifles were granted the freedom of Spennymoor, Co Durham on Armed Services Day in a moving and very well attended ceremony. There were also presentations of special service medals to soldiers recently returned from Afghanistan. Led by the Band and Bugles of Durham ACF , the Company then marched proudly through the town to huge acclaim.
Durham Photographic Society members were once again on hand to capture this memorable Rifles Regiment event.
