More from the Archives: 120 Years ago today!

On 10th June 1892, the Durham County Advertiser reported:

Durham City Camera Club

The first outing of the Club took place on Whit Monday, the rondez (sic) vous being Alnwick. Through the kindness of the Duke of Northumberland, access to the castle, grounds and surroundings was granted and the party courteously conducted through the chapel and principle room of the castle, the magnificent and gorgeous drawing room and banquet hall greatly admired. The armoury was next visited and much amusement was caused by the castodious performance on the autiquated bicycle. After viewing other interesting sights, photographic operations commenced and many exposures were made on the ancient castle from many positions.

After partaking of an excellent dinner at the Star Hotel, the party returned to Durham having spent a most enjoyable outing with fine photographic weather.

The whole of the arrangements were ably carried out by the Hon. Secretary.

By the way, who was the wag who closed the trapdoor when several of the party was in the depth of the dark dungeons?

We still have outings (now called Assignments) organised by the current Hon. Secretary and still “partake” a meal at the local pub.
