For the fifth year running, Bowburn Banner Group hosted this event, in Bowburn Community Centre, during the national Heritage Open Days weekend. Visitors and banner enthusiasts from all over the region flocked to see over 50 banners, old and new, on display, some very fragile and rarely seen in public. Once again, Durham Photographic Society exhibited prints of past Big Meetings from their collection during the day.
Durham Photographic Society members have enjoyed a close relationship with Bowburn Banner Group since 2006 when the Bowburn Centenary banner was commissioned and first appeared at the Gala. It was from a suggestion by the late Murray Martin of Amber Films and Side Gallery that we document in still photography the essence of the Big Meeting by following one specific banner which we did.
