Magnasite works, Hartlepool
As mentioned on a recent club night, the security personnel that were preventing access to the site are no longer around. This is presumably because the redevelopment into housing and a nature reserve is on hold.
As before, there are rights of way, for instance from the tunnel to the beach, and on the periphery including the road that runs along the railway.
Anyone venturing onto the site of the works, which the Society does not recommend, should take the utmost care for health and safety reasons and have someone else with you. The photography potential is good from the right of way areas and the beach as always and there is a now a wonderfully corroded, torched and weathered metal container by the tunnel exit (pictured). The beach is one of the best of the Coalfield Coast.
See also Blog item earlier this month, Steetley Magnasite Works and Chimney.
Update 12th February: the container is no longer there.
