Joanne Gray snaps COAST 2 COAST CHALLENGE

DPS member Joanne Gray says, “I'm documenting a coast 2 coast challenge, 5 PEOPLE- 5 MARATHONS- 5 DAYS from Whitehaven to North Shields.

This challenge is for HELP FOR HERO'S and PC DAVID RATHBAND’S BLUE LAMP FOUNDATION

I've been with the team since Wednesday (not running with them of course!) and will follow them to the finish line in North Shields (NE30 4JF) on Sunday.

Today Fri 27th they will be running from High Bankhill in Cumbria to Haltwhistle.

Tomorrow Sat 28th the team will be running into Hexham and laying a wreath at the war memorial. The Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland will be there to greet them and give a short service at 1400 hrs.

Finally, Sunday 29th the team will be making their way into North Shields, where they will be joined by David Rathband and his Guide about 10k from the finish line and run in with the team.

Not sure of times into Shields, probably approx. 4-5 ish. Lots of photo opportunities and should be very emotional.

I feel very honoured and privileged to be just a small part of this immense challenge.

I am very grateful to our members for their donations at the club last night”.

Joanne’s mobile number is 07979 348429 if you would like to offer any support.

DIGITAL NIGHT

Next Wednesday, 1st June, County Hall, 7.00 to 9.00 pm. All members welcome. Will include a demonstration by recent winner of the 2nd Progress Print competition, Ian Stafford, using Nik Color Efex software and more! There will be a further update about some other interesting demonstration on the Blog shortly.

MEMBERS NIGHT 7th July – Themes and Variations

This is the night a number of members show pictures and talk about them. It is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our DPS year. Any of our members are welcome to take part whether new or long-standing, experienced or new to photography. Programme Secretary Paul Ritchie said, “It’s simply a matter of showing a few pictures and talking about them. Perhaps they are linked by a theme, a project or technique”. To register your interest, there is a list on the notice board to put your name down. Speak to Paul on club night if you need to know more. You can show prints or images by digital projection. Ideally, the digital images are on memory stick.

ASSIGNMENT SALTBURN!

The debrief was Wednesday 25th May 7.00 pm County Hall room 2. Many and varied was the work shown and members spent an enjoyable and stimulating couple of hours sharing experiences and discussing the prints. The feedback from the group was invaluable and will help members go on to have successful competition and exhibition pictures.

The Saltburn gallery of just some of the images from the day will be on the Assignment section of the website soon. The next outing will be announced by Colin shortly.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION

This is the big one! It will once again be in the Galilee Chapel, Durham Cathedral and seen by thousands of visitors from all over the UK and from all over the world. It runs from 9th to 26th July. All members are invited to provide two of their best, recent (say 2010/2011) prints in 20x16 inch or 40x50 cm mounts. Help is available with mounting if needed.

Deadline to the club is 23rd June. You also need to confirm your intention to take part – there is a list on the board.

KNOCKOUT COMPETITION June 30th

Another regular and popular feature of the programme. See recent Blog for details.

COMPETITION COUNTDOWN: it’s a Knockout

There are no more competition closing dates between now and the summer break in August, just various results nights.

However, there is one other fun competition night when members simply bring in print entries on the night having emailed digital entries:

June 30th, Print and Digital Image Knockout Competition

Pictures are put up in pairs and the audience votes to decide which goes through until there is an eventual winner. You can enter up to 3 prints and up to 3 DIs. The images should not have been seen before at the club, portfolios or assignment reviews.

Prints - max size A4 this includes mount (easiest way is to run off A4 print and flush mount) - mounting helps otherwise the floppy print falls off the print box!

DI’s - 1024x768 (landscape) or 768 high for portrait. Max file size should be around 500kb or less. Best if emailed to Roger Culpin.  Subject heading - "DPS k/o" so he know it's not spam!

NEW! A QUICK GUIDE TO COMPETITIONS

Never let it be said your committee sits on their hands or rests on their laurels! Recognising that it can be confusing, for new members especially, to fully grasp what entries are required, allowed even, in the many and varied competitions on offer (that have evolved over more than 60 years), The Quick Guide to Competitions spreadsheet has been produced. At a glance you can now see exactly what is needed for each competition.

You can find The Quick Guide to Competitions in appendix 2 of the Welcome to the club – guidance for new members. Simply click on Welcome on the home page of this web site and go to New Members Info.

There is also a PDF file in Downloads from the home page.

If well received there will be an update in 2012 and beyond.

The Quick Guide to Competitions is from an idea by none other than Colin Armitstead and the design is by multi talented Joe Grabham. Our superb webmaster, John Brown, made it happen on line.

SIDE GALLERY – May Issue of Amber’s e-newsletter

Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the streets of Haiti

Amber’s May e-newsletter is out now and contains news of the next Side Gallery exhibition, Kanaval by Leah Gordon which opens Saturday 11th June. There is a photographer’s talk at 2.00 pm on opening day and there will be free refreshments.

The current exhibition, A Luta Continua!/The Struggle Continues!, closes at 5.00 pm, Saturday 28th May. This, with the hugely successful “Open Call” element, with submissions from all over the world, is an absolute must see.

Jack Johnson APAGB – Funeral arrangements

Further to my message the other day, Jack Johnson’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 25th May as follows

The Church Service will be held at 1.15pm at:-

St Peter’s Church

Sunderland Road

South Shields

NE34 6NG

From A19 (North or South) take A194 toward South Shields, then at roundabout take A1300 (John Reid Road)

At about 3rd roundabout (with A1018) take 3rd exit to Prince Edward Drive.

At next roundabout turn left on to Sunderland Road (northwards).

St Peter’s Church is on the left almost at the junction of Sunderland Road & Marsden Road and is opposite 2 public houses - ‘The Old Ship Inn’ & ‘The Vigilant’.

I am not sure what the parking facilities are like in this area.

The service will be followed by an interment ceremony at:-

South Tyneside Crematorium

John Reid Road

South Shields

NE34 9DT

The Crematorium is on the A1300 (John Reid Road) between its junction with the A194 and the B1298.  When travelling from direction of the A194 the Crematorium is situated to the right after the first mini roundabout.   The car park is to the right immediately after the gates and there is also a lay-by outside the premises for those travelling from a South Shields direction as parking can be difficult inside the gates.

Jack will be long remembered as one of the stalwarts of club photography as well as being a gentleman and a very nice person.

We will circulate further details regarding funeral arrangements as soon as they are known, but in the meanwhile if anyone wishes to send cards or letters of condolence they should send it to the following address:-

From the Front Line of ASSIGNMENT SALTBURN

7 am Saturday morning and Tom is up with the larks and in the shower. Half an hour (yes HALF AN HOUR) later and Tom has to drag the quilt off Marie to get her out of bed – she is not a morning person. It is nine o'clock and we are finally on our way to Saltburn. We arrive at the car park which is already full of our DPS members. Colin says he knows it must be 10 o'clock because we always arrive dot on time. It's the same on a Thursday night. Colin knows that David will shout out "take your seats please" just as we walk through the door.

We get our kit out and although the weather is a bit grim, we wander down to the beach where we spot a rather large number of horses and riders galloping along the waters edge. There must have been twenty or more. David Forster has beaten us to it and we stop for a chat. We wander back towards the pier and a nice friendly chap tells us that there are some wonderful colours in the rock formations below the cliffs and with Colin's rock challenge in mind, off we dash. The nice friendly chap is spot on with his information and we spend a great deal of time getting some good images (we hope). Next we decide to head towards the town centre to see what we can find there and take the easy route using the famous funicular railway. When we get to the top we are greeted by the paparazzi - Tony, Colin and Ian. We hope they got some good shots of us. We spent our last half hour wandering around the town centre. Doesn't time fly when you are enjoying yourselves?

We made our way down to The Ship Inn. Colin had done it again and found us a really nice lunch. He must spend a lot of his time in pubs doing consumer research. He had obviously been down on his knees again as the weather had really cheered up during the morning. We had a great time as always at lunch joining in with the banter and camaraderie. We now know that Lilian loves lemon cheesecake and that John will never ever agree to do the vote of thanks!

So another successful assignment group outing and we can't wait to meet up on 25th May to see another set of fantastic images.

We travelled back through Redcar and caught Tony and Veronica scoffing lemon top ice creams - but we had already gone one better and just had the full monty and here is the picture to prove it!

CLUB NIGHT PREVIEW, May 19th

Peter Paterson FRPS, MPAGB, EFIAP

Programme Secretary Paul Ritchie has done it again. Yet another great night is in store for our eager members. Peter Paterson is a photographer of international renown, is a member of Edinburgh Photographic Society and his talk is entitled, “Photography My Way”.

Peter’s main subject interests are landscape, still life and abstract in both mono and colour. He has gained the Fellowship distinction of the Royal Photographic Society, the EFIAP award and the Master distinction of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. His work has been published widely in magazines. For a preview of Peter’s inspirational photography, check out the galleries on his website:

TWO INTERNATIONAL PRINT SALONS TO ENTER

From our Internationals Correspondent

The results of The London Salon will shortly be announced, so now is a good time to make you aware of two other International Salons that you may wish to enter.

Alongside the Royal Photographic Society's International Print Exhibition and The London Salon, the Edinburgh International Exhibition of Photography is one the most prestigious International Salons for print workers to try and get an acceptance. Generally around 3000 prints are submitted with just over 200 accepted and put on display in Edinburgh. Established in 1861 and now in its 149th year, to get an acceptance in this Salon is a massive achievement. Not only that but 3 Gold FIAP medals and 6 FIAP ribbons are up for grabs.

The closing date is 17th June and more information about the entry rules and fees is available at www.edinburghphotgraphicsociety.co.uk

The Solway Salon has also just been announced and this is a new salon for print workers. Closing date is 1st June and more details about the entry conditions and fees is here: www.westcumbriaphotogroup.co.uk

Good luck!

Helvellyn by the Ridges

This is one of my favourite Lakeland walks and the 2-3 mile trek from Glenridding, up Greenside Lane to the disused mine workings, warms me up and gets me into the right mindset for scaling one of England’s four monroes. At the mine the tourist track cuts left across the valley towards Red Tarn but I keep to the starboard side and continue another mile to the broken dam that bridges the valley at Keppel Cove.

My choice here is either to cross the dry watercourse or step over the flimsy wooden barrier and chance the narrow, crumbling concrete walkway, sans safety rail, across the top of the dam. Think, the Bridge at Khazad-dum. Now I really, really do not enjoy heights. I remember crossing this once in February in ice and snow, on my hands and knees and whimpering, but it’s summer now, right, how hard can it be?

I then climb the steep slope of Catstye Cam, which brings me directly onto the summit and to one of the most magnificent views in the Lakes; a panorama sweeping across Glenridding to Ullswater, across Red Tarn to Striding Edge, over the summit of Helvellyn and down the tumbled rockscape of Swirral Edge. But not today. Today I have climbed up into thick, dark, low cloud with visibility down to about 4 metres. Oh, globbetts! I stamp my feet and set off towards Swirral Edge. This steeply rising ridge is not one for the faint hearted and I shove my Leki stick into my belt and start grabbing lumps of rock. It is an entertaining scramble, especially in the half light, but eventually I pull onto the summit and head over to Helvellyn’s shelter cairn for a cuppa and a Mars bar.

Midway through the Mars, the clouds begin to clear and I drop towards Striding Edge in glorious sunlight. The track here is pretty steep and crumbly, followed by a sharp scramble up to the proper start of the ridge. I now stay on the top so that I get views all round and can look down on the infirm and disabled who stick to the tourist path about 5 metres below. The ridge varies from 10 centimetres to two metres wide and provides an exhilarating, high level route. The usual path down is now a tedious, descending walk into Grizedale, but I cut down the side of the valley instead and pick up the path at Red Tarn, returning to Glenridding via a disused wagon track.

If you are a believer in the old maxim that every day you should do two things that frighten you, this route can get you a little ahead of the game, while (weather permitting) providing some of the best views this country has to offer.

BEAMISH WEEKEND EXHIBITION

The NCPF Members Beamish Weekend is 18th, 19th 20th June. Durham PS will be taking part in the NCPF Members’ Exhibition (10 prints per club). Joe Grabham is requesting that you bring in next week a print with a northern theme, mounted 20x16ins. The final 10 will be chosen by ballot. The prints will be on sale to the public.

More information about the exhibition and the weekend event is here: http://www.ncpf.org.uk/index.php?id=ncpf-events

ASSIGNMENT SALTBURN!

The debrief will be 25th May 7.00 pm County Hall. Bring 8 images for the Assignment Gallery (or email David Forster), the usual 4 prints plus one of “Stones, Rocks” plus one of an unusual take of the pier (Colin’s Challenge).

MEMBERS AV NIGHT 28th July

Last call! Make sure Mavis knows if you are definitely, or even possibly, taking part.

THE APPRENTICE

Two, in fact! Roger Culpin needs a couple of volunteer members to deputise for him in operating our digital projection equipment.

On a general point, any member with special skills that would like to actively take part in club activities are welcome to step forward and volunteer. An example could be giving the vote of thanks. Don’t wait to be asked!

HONORARY LIFE VICE PRESIDENT MAURICE SANDERSON

Much loved Maurice, who has not been able to get to the club lately, will be 85 on Monday. Happy Birthday Maurice!

NCPF Beamish Event

The NCPF is running an event in conjunction with Beamish Museum which will take place over the weekend 18/19/20 June.

Over this weekend members of NCPF clubs and their families can take advantage of reduced admission fees on production of an NCPF pass that we can provide nearer the time.

There will be the usual photographic opportunities at the Museum but as well as this there will be a classic car event, the Beamish Reliability Run, on the Sunday. Here, photographers can use their passes to gain entry to the Museum before and after normal opening times. As well as the actual 150-mile Run, there will be a static display of pre-1956 vehicles.

There will be a competition for pictures taken at the Museum over the weekend. The closing date is the beginning of August. This will be judged at Washington Camera Club in October and the winner gets to hold the new Beamish Trophy for a Year.

In addition, over the weekend there will be a Selling Exhibition of pictures from NCPF clubs. Each club can enter up to ten prints which should have a “Northern” theme. These will be offered for sale at £30 – Beamish would take £7.50 commission; the rest going to the photographer.

Time is short for anyone thinking of putting a picture into the Selling Exhibition – we’ll need them by next week, 19th May! They should be on 20”x16” mounts; name and club on the back and the NCPF suggest a signature/initials on the front of the mount just below the bottom right of the actual print. We are putting a limit of one print per member on this. Please don’t forget the “Northern theme” and the fact that we can only enter ten pictures.

ANGY’S GRAND DAY OUT

From the front line of the Royal Wedding:-

If I were edged into a corner to sum up my royal wedding experience it would have to breathtaking.

It began at 6am in Trafalgar square, as the time passed I was interviewed live on German ZDF TV, Chinese TV and the Daily Mail to name just a few, this with the emerging thousands made my early start worth while. By 10am Trafalgar Square was filling fast with well wishers from all walks of life and around the world. Some dressed normally waving the token flag or dressed to impress from kings, queens, brides, grooms or like myself covered in the union flag as far as possible.

As word was spread and the huge TV screens showed Prince William and his best man Harry departing Clarence House everyone stood up and a hush fell across the square. It was the same when Kate emerged looking stunning in her Sarah Burton dress. Necks were stretched beyond normality; handkerchiefs were reached for across the square, silence then an eruption of cheers, cries and clapping that echoed for what seemed to be a lifetime.

I have posted a few pictures here but what the cameras couldn't have picked up was the wonderful electrifying deafening sounds throughout the day at key moments, the cheers, and singing, hugging and huge smiles.

After the ‘I do’s’ it was then a mad dash to Hyde Park for the after wedding party we had planned. Battling through thousands of well wishers all with the same idea was exhausting but worth it as we managed to see the flypast, Royal kisses and dance to the celebrations that had been laid on by good old Boris.

Later walking to Buckingham Palace and up the Mall we were in the right place at the right time to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge leave in the vintage Aston Martin looking so very happy. I was too far away to get a decent picture but I have it in my memory forever.

All in all it was a grand day out.

SIDE GALLERY LATEST

Latest news of the on-going issue of Arts Council funding is here: http://createsend.com/t/r-FE6A3826F1300760

There is also an article by the writer Lee Hall (who wrote the screenplay for Billy Elliot) in the Times on Saturday, April 30th, in an unprecedented double page broadsheet spread complete with photographs from the Side collection that have influenced Lee in his work. The headline reads, “One of the most influential arts groups you have never heard of”. Another quote, “No other group has ever collected such a deep, varied and important record of a region”. One of the pictures is by Dean Chapman who gave the Harry Holder Lecture at DPS in 2007.

Meantime, 'A Luta Continua!' continues to be well received and there has been a particularly good response to the 'Open Call' element  of the exhibition.

People are continuing to email Side with images of protest, revolution and resistance from around the world, allowing this section of the exhibition to continually grow and evolve.

Side will continue to add work until the last week of the exhibition (deadline: Thursday 19th May) so it's not too late to get involved.
