FIRE WALK FOR ST CUTHBERT’S HOSPICE – NEWS REPORT

Over 30 brave people walked barefoot across blazing embers for a St Cuthbert’s fundraising event in Durham’s Market Place last night. Volunteer members of the Society were on hand to capture the scenes for St Cuthbert’s. A good relationship between the Hospice and the Society has built up over the last year and we look forward to applying our photography skills for them at many events in the future.

Pickering Wartime Weekend – News Report

Several members enjoyed a great day of photography on Saturday 17th October. This celebration of all things WW2 included 100’s of Re-enactors, a massive parade of wartime vehicles, nostalgic music, steam trains and characters galore. Thousands of visitors flocked to the event from all over the country. No doubt pictures from the day will be seen in DPS Portfolios, competitions and members nights for some considerable time to come!
The 2010 Wartime weekend is a must in the diary for photographers. There is also the North’s biggest steam event 5th to 8th August – Pickering Traction Engine Rally – to look forward to.
“Having recommended this event to fellow members I was a little concerned I may have oversold it but I needn’t have worried. Everyone was clearly enjoying themselves” Stephen Bell
“Even better than Whitby Goth Festival! I had a great day” Neil Maughan
“A very happy day. The crowds of peoplel enjoying themselves. Pictures everywhere – portraits, reportage, what we used to call candids and steam trains on top. What’s not to like?” Tony Griffiths

Report of the President October 09

I must begin by expressing sincere thanks to David for standing in for me when I was unable to attend on the 3rd of this month..
Over the last month we have been well entertained by a variety of speakers not least our own Arthur Attle, but also Bill and Margaret Stephens and John Thompson. Peter Gennard provided a very able substitute for Peter Reece. He showed an excellent selection of images which were a very creditable illustration of where Amateur Photography is at the moment.
I applaud Tony and John’s experiment in projecting images of the prints as they were being judged on the 3rd. My concern here is the workload that committee members are taking on. I am well aware of the work some members do routinely and without complaint, and feel that any increase should me carefully considered. While I am addressing this subject can I urge committee members to try to involve all members in the routine tasks of running Thursday nights. A gentle request to people standing about before or after meetings to help move tables or chairs would not come amiss. These routine tasks need not be the sole province of the committee.

DPS MEMBERS DESCEND ON PADDY’S HOLE

Paddy’s Hole, South Gare is a paradise for photographers, and members enjoyed a great day of photography on a glorious day in October. The light was perfect and varied through the day and the fishermen we met were very friendly and amenable to being photographed. Everyone was free to do their own thing and there was an added challenge, set by General Secretary Colin Armitstead – to interpret in still photography the word “Wood”. Many and varied will be the pictures that come out of this. There was the usual congenial banter and members took the opportunity to get to know each other better – not so easy during the hub-bub and excitement of a club night. Altogether a very enjoyable experience. We’re all looking forward to the next outing and the de-brief session where pictures will be shown and discussed. This will be Wednesday 28th Oct, County Hall 7-9 pm.
“Great breakfast, good company and limitless photo opportunities. All this … and more ... Magic!” Terry Messenger
" A great location, with loads of picture taking opportunities. It was also enjoyable to experience it with other photographers from DPS. We spurred each other on with the picture taking and it was also good to talk to people who I didn't know from the club. Overall an excellent day and thanks must go to CA for organising " Neil Maughan“Great photo opportunities, great company, great day!” Ian Stafford

Pickering Wartime Weekend

Every October, the North Yorkshire Moors Railways recaptures the spirit of the second world
war, with its War Time Weekend.
It is an annual tribute to the men and women who kept Britain's railways running throughout
the war. To remember them, they recreate the sights and sounds of those dark days. Every
hour, steam trains leave with servicemen and women, factory workers, land army girls,
nurses. The weekend begins with the ceremonial flag raising on Friday, and
continues until it is lowered again on Sunday afternoon.

The PAGB Great British Cup

This is a recently-introduced competition where the PAGB invite clubs from all over the country to submit digital images for judging in the New Year. We need to select 18 images from our members to enter the Open Section. We already have quite a large bank of pictures which have been entered into our regular club competitions, but of course if you have any pictures which have not been seen at the club you can also enter those.

There is also a Natural History section, where the “PAGB Natural History Photographer of the Year” award will be up for grabs. The bare minimum entry would be 4 images from one member, but if we want to enter the club competition in Natural History we would need 10 pictures from at least three members. The entry fee for this section (paid by the club!) depends on the number of photographers taking part, so with this in mind there will be a list on the club notice board – put your name down if you are interested.

This is a very prestigious event, so please try to give it your support. New images can be given to Joe Grabham on CD or by email (see “Committee” in the “More” tab on this Blog page). If you want to see the kind of work we will be up against, have a look at last year’s winners at http://www.pagb-photography-uk.co.uk/pagb-cup-08.htm

– scarily good!

1. The Digital Images will be projected on a fully calibrated Canon XEED projector with PC/Laptop running Windows XP.

2. We will project in sRGB and you are advised to convert from any other colour space.

3. Mode must be RGB Colour or Grayscale, 8 bits only.

File Format and Size

1. File Format must be .tiff (no compression) or .jpeg (compression 12). Tiff is preferred.

2. Image Size – maximum 1400 pixels horizontal, maximum 1050 pixels vertical. (Not 1400 vertical please).

Please Note – 1400 x 1050 is the native resolution of the projector so these dimensions will give optimum viewing. We will not resize your files unless they are very large and you are welcome to send smaller images which will appear a little smaller on the screen.

3. DPI makes no difference but if it makes you happier you can size at 96 DPI.

4. Images must not contain layers and must be completely ‘flattened’ prior to submission.

5. The image will be disqualified if it displays the title or the author's name.
