A Tale of David Trout’s Sir Nigel Gresley

By David Trout

This is a photo I took of the locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway a couple of years ago and a blow up poster of it is now gracing the wall of a hotel bedroom in Doncaster.

The reason: locomotive engineer the late Nigel Gresley, who built a fleet of famous engines for the former London and North Eastern Railway, was based there and the engines were built at the Doncaster works. The photo project came about thanks to Durham PS’ John Attle and his excellent contacts at Durham Cathedral.

A publicity firm working on projects with the cathedral asked if their Durham PS contacts could turn up a photo of one of Gresley’s engines, Mallard, Flying Scotsman or Sir Nigel Gresley itself.

I was away on holiday when their request came so John quarried my Pentax Gallery and found this image. (Thanks John).

I also looked through my files and decided the one John chose was the best for the job. It was accepted and has been turned into a poster sized image.

The result is a free night’s stay at the **** Best Western Mount Pleasant Hotel at Rossington on the outskirts of Doncaster for Irene and myself – in the room where the picture is displayed.
