News: Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Work to remove the Millennium Bridge’s bollards has begun.

The bridge’s protective boom’s and piles were installed in 2000 to protect the structure from accidental damage from river traffic. A re-evaluation has concluded there is no risk and they are being removed. A floating crane called Atlas (not the original one) is on site and the work should be completed by the end of March.

The bollards did not feature in the original designs for the bridge but were added during the construction phase. Their removal will mean that the bridge will appear, for the very first time, the way its designer originally intended which is good news for photographers.
