The Story Behind the Picture: All at Ease

All at Ease won first prize in the DPS 2011 2nd Progress Print competition for Ian Stafford and was well received on the Folio Forum, i-witness.

“I had to laugh a little when this picture was featured in the Durham Times recently, the capture ended with ‘Do you have memorable pictures of the North-East?’, Hah…..it was taken in Brugge!

Just like the Netherlands, the Belgians love to use bicycles and Brugge is full of them. I watched many go up and down the road in which our hotel was situated and decided that, as I had never shot using the ‘panning’ technique, this was an excellent opportunity to try. I pre-visualised the image of a woman in pastel coloured clothing going past a brick building without any distracting features/posters/signs etc and didn’t have to walk far from the hotel to position myself.

I stood on the opposite side of the road and pre-focused a little way off the kerb. With my feet parallel and facing directly towards where I hoped to capture the shot, I turned my body to the right and smoothly followed cyclists, continuing to pan after pressing the shutter as in a golf swing (see, reading all those ‘how-to’ articles does come in handy sometimes!). Two cyclists fitted the scene as intended and I managed to get what I thought were pretty good attempts, beginners luck! Looking back, I’d have preferred the cyclist captured in between the windows.

The shot was taken using a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 at 62mm, f10 @ 1/60 (generally you would use a slightly slower speed than this for panning). Very little was done post capture, the usual levels and sharpening, a slight desaturation and a light vignette to pull you into the picture using Lightroom.”

The Story Behind the Picture: Beyond the Storm

This image is by Christine Oliphant who won the print and digital Progress competitions in 2011

This image was taken at D’Amado, on the Alentejo coast of Portugal. Dark rain filled clouds threatened to end any aspirations of getting a decent sunset shot, but undeterred I thought if by any chance the sky played ball I needed to be in position. As D’Amado is on the west coast I knew that if the sun did make an appearance I would be shooting into it and the rock formations would be silhouetted against the sky. The tide was going out, but I counted that every 7th wave was a big one and would come further up the beach than the others, so found a rather nice stone in a rock pool to use as my foreground interest, and waited for the 7th wave. A few gaps started appearing in the threatening clouds, just enough to show some sunset colour, and choosing a slowish shutter speed to get some movement in the incoming wave, I waited for my next big 7th wave and pressed the shutter button. When doing long exposures it is always hit and miss as to the patterning in the water, but I was delighted when I saw that I had managed to capture the water movement behind the rock but had timed it so that the rock pool was still very still and clear in front of the rock. Pure luck and fortuity in that respect!!

Shot in RAW, white balance corrected in Adobe Camera Raw, slight rotation to straighten a wonky horizon ( tripod sinking in wet sand). Nikon D300s, Sigma 10mm – 20 mm wide angle lens, Lee 0.9 hard grad filter. Aperture f13, shutter speed 0.5 s.

LUMIERE FESTIVAL

Getting ready to glow

The City is buzzing with construction work taking place in preparation for the fabulous Lumiere Festival in Durham, last seen in 2009. This year’s festival runs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th November, 6.00 to 11.00 p.m. each evening. It will feature a fire garden in and around Durham Cathedral, an equestrian snowdome in Market Square, Ove Arup's favourite bridge turned into a waterfall: a city transformed by the art of light.

There will be a whole range of installations, talks and events. The festival guide can be picked up in the Town Hall, Market Place (check out the DPS exhibition, “Autumn” while you are there) and other outlets. Also on line here:

http://www.lumieredurham.co.uk/

Remember it will be extremely busy (the reason we had to cancel our club night meeting on Thursday) and you will need to plan travel and parking carefully. Some useful general tips are here:

http://www.lumieredurham.co.uk/visitor-info/top-tips/

PHOTOGRAPHY: there will be opportunities galore. We have also received a couple of requests for pictures:

Marcia at St Cuthbert’s Hospice would love to have some good Lumiere images of Durham for the St Cuthbert’s Hospice 2013 calendar and Christmas cards.

Lewis Wilkinson, secretary for a local youth street band called jazz in my pants, who will be playing in the opening ceremony of Durham's Lumiere festival on Thursday 17th November was wondering if anyone from the society would like to take photos of the band, who will be marching from the Gala Theatre to Durham Cathedral in full costume, starting at 6:00pm.

These are two good causes that would benefit from our support. Tony G has the contact details.

From the Front Line of: Whitby Goth Weekend

From our Roving PhotoFest Reporter

The Goth weekend has always been a favourite for photographers trying to capture the characters who parade the streets in their fantastic costumes and make up. This year was no exception despite the weather forecast!

The rain did put a few off as the crowds and Goths were decidedly thin on the ground in the morning and most stayed either in the pavilion or the leisure centre or, as we did, had a look around the American ‘muscle car’ exhibition, an interesting change from the normal course of events. We immediately thought, “Lilian Blot would love this!”.

By the afternoon though, as the rain eased, everyone came out and the steady flow up to St Mary’s churchyard was seen. Most people were aware of the ban on posing on tombstones and as far as we could see everybody supported this without grumbles. The light was good for portraits with none of the high contrast sunny conditions you often get and photographers made use of it shooting well into the dark.

Overall it was another great day out, bacon butties, fish and chips Yorkshire tea and happy re-unions included. We were slightly worried about Stephen becoming ‘frightened’ again after his terrifying experience with the Durham Zombies last week but he held his nerve like a true professional.

On a final note it looks like the two organisations who held rival event have again become one which should strengthen the event for next year.
