AV NIGHT 29th July
This is the night members show their latest AVs (Audio Visual digital image shows with sound track). Technology in this sector is progressing, as in all things photography, and we can look forward to a very exciting and stimulating evening. PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE CATHEDRAL – Tuesday 1st June
The free places for members have been taken up. Will those members please meet John Attle on the night at 6.15 by the font in the Cathedral. Anyone else wishing to take part can do so for a fee of £10 per camera.

Wednesday 3rd June, 7.00 pm, County Hall. There will be demonstrations by our most expert members. They will also give advice on specific images so Please bring them along (on CD or memory stick) if you need help with them.

TOWN HALL ENTRANCE GALLERY
For June, we need your Durham Regatta and Durham riverside prints! Please bring them to the club next Thursday.
Are you interested in photography and would you like to spend an evening inside the Cathedral with your camera? If so, come along to our special photography evening on 1st June 2010 from 6.30pm to 9pm.
Tickets are £10.00 per camera which will include a cup of tea or coffee from the Undercroft Restaurant. The restaurant will be open throughout the event for refreshments and light meals.
Weather permitting, the Tower will be open, though there is an additional charge of £5.00 for adults and £2.50 for children to climb the Tower.
No flash is permitted in the Cathedral but tripods are welcome.
All photography taken on the day is for non-commercial use only and must not be used for any purpose other than personal use.
To attend, please complete a booking form and return it to Diane McIlroy at the Chapter Office. This event will be repeated during July. Cheques should be made payable to Durham Cathedral.
***** Denis Thorpe
The DPS annual lecture sponsored by and in memory of the late,
great Harry Holder was given this year by Denis Thorpe
on Thursday 20th May. Denis was for many years one of a
select group of photographers working for the Manchester
Guardian, later the Guardian. Guardian photography has
always been considered to stand head and shoulders above
other that in other papers, and Dennis was acknowledged as
one of its greatest snappers.
The first half of the evening was devoted to a recent
exhibition at the Lowry Centre in Manchester, showing
wonderful examples of Guardian photography garnered from
the last 100 years. The show was brought about when Don
McPhee, a friend and photographic colleague of Dennis,
found some early glass plates when the newspaper darkroom
was being demolished. Don sadly died before completing
the work, and Denis took over as organiser. The Society
was treated to some amazing images, enlivened by an
excellent commentary.
The second half of the evening featured Denis's own
photography, and we saw a succession of superb
photographs, some well known, as they have become icons of
press photography. In Denis's time the staff
photographer was given much more freedom to come up with
what were often pictures of great subtlety, which
encapsulated the mood or theme upon which they were
working. His talk was amusing and really very enjoyable,
and it was felt that Harry Holder would have thoroughly
approved.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening, and in my opinion it
will go down as one of the best of all time.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION
Planning for our biggest and most important exhibition of the year is now underway. Set in the glorious Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral, our annual exhibition is a showcase for the best and most exciting photography by members of the Society over the last year. Members wishing to take part must firstly put their names down on the list displayed at the club, and as soon as possible.
CLUB NIGHT 27th May
Results night, 2nd Progress Prints. Members should be aware that the 2010 Halfords Tour Series cycle race takes place at 7 pm that night which could cause some congestion in the city though Church Street and approaches are not affected. The circuit takes in Margery Lane, Crossgate, South Street, and Grove Street.
NCPF 31st NORTHERN COUNTIES INTERNATIONAL SALON OF PHOTOGRAOHY
Entry forms are available at the club or can be downloaded from www.ncpf.org. Entries are from individuals though the club will facilitate delivery of prints. Closing date is August 20th.
Finchale Training College has renamed its main building Richard Annand VC House.It was almost seventy years to the day that his actions which led him to be awarded the VC were carried out.
