Arthur Smith DPAGB: “Arthur Smith Exposed”

We eagerly await the arrival of Arthur Smith to the club, the latest in a long line of fabulous photographers to show us their work. Arthur is a member of Tynemouth Photographic Society and a quote from their website gives us a clue as to what to expect: “I like to think I have an eclectic approach to my photography, some may say eccentric”.

Check out this link for a preview of Arthur’s work: http://www.tynemouthps.co.uk/mg---arthur-smith.html

From the Front Line of the Wear Area Battle

David Trout reports:

Good news and bad news at the Wear Area Battle 2012. The good news is that five of our seven pictures all got good marks.

Middlin’ news is we came 2nd to Sunderland.

Bad news is that two of our pictures got dismal marks.

Still we came 2nd with 180 marks against Sunderland’s 186. Washington were third with 179.

The good news on the other pictures was:

Michael Watson – Another Kill for the merlin – 29 (2nd highest mark of the night) The highest marked picture, 30, was from Sunderland

John Wise - Great Blue Heron Nesting 27

Stephen Bell – John McGuiness – Stephen Bell 27

Ian Stafford – Vietnamese Children 27

Ian Stafford - Happiness Is 26

There’s no cigar for David Trout or Neil Maughan as their pictures ‘Blizzard’ and ‘Morning Cuppa’ got just 22 marks out of 30 despite them both having previous considerable success in international salons.

The judge was Jim Welch from Blyth. And as always Washington Camera Club made their visitors welcome and provided an excellent buffet.

News: Remembrance Sunday 2012

Once again, Durham PS members were on hand to document the Remembrance Sunday events in Durham City. From the cathedral and the laying of wreaths at the DLI Memorial Garden to the marching through the streets of Durham, the march past and salute in the Market place and the traditional gathering in the Town Hall. Altogether it was a spectacular and moving occasion as always.

The GB Cup

The closing date for this national event, run by the PAGB, is fast approaching.

We enter the two sections, Open and Nature, as a club – selecting 15 pictures for the Open and (up to) 21 pictures for the Nature section. Both sections are for projected images only (1400x1050 max).

The number of pictures a club enters for the Nature section can vary; for example, it’s quite possible for just one person to enter 3 images (the maximum per author) and they still have a chance to win an individual award. To qualify for a club entry, though, we need a minimum of 10 pictures from at least 4 members.

In the Open section, our selection committee has the benefit of having our stock of pictures from this year’s club competitions and it’s likely that most of our entry will come from these – but if you have something new that you would like to offer for selection, then by all means send it to Joe Grabham (by email or CD) by December 6th (club deadline).

Results night: Digital and George Samuel Trophies

Judge Alan Porrett ARPS DPAGB AFIAP APAGB

The George Samuel Trophy is for slide of the year and, sadly in many ways, this is our last slide competition ever. There will be no more from 2013 onwards. So this is the last hurrah for projected colour reversal film after a long and illustrious history. As far as we know, we were the last club to still have projected slides competitions but even we have to bow to the inevitable. We pay tribute to all our slide workers past and present for their fabulous work over many years.

The Digital Trophy is also changing as announced at the AGM last week. This will be the last time the entries have to demonstrate the versatility of the photographer.

So many reasons to not miss this night! And as a bonus we have our old friend Alan Porrett doing the judging honours.

Duncan McEwan: “Special Brew””

Don’t miss!

It is a real pleasure to welcome the renowned Scottish landscape and natural history photographer Duncan McEwan to the club this Thursday. Duncan is also a popular judge, lecturer and leader of photographic holidays and workshops. He is a Sony Advocate Photographer, using Sony Alpha DSLRs and Sony Alpha Carl Zeiss lenses.

“Special Brew” explores how to make effective use of colour, light and composition across a whole range of subjects.

So highly regarded is Duncan, we have had to make this a members only night because of the risk of over-crowding the hall.
