NEWS REPORT: ASSIGNMENT M’BRO!

Saturday 25th September

There was a very big turnout of enthusiastic members for the Society’s Assignment outing to the Middlehaven dockland area, which includes the stunning Temenos by Anish Kapoor amongst many other attractions for photographers. It is safe to say, a good time was had by all. If previous trips are anything to go by, as illustrated at the recent members’ night at the club, many and varied will be the superb photography produced. There will be a follow up session when pictures are shown and discussed.

All interested members can join in. Just make sure you are on organiser Colin Armitstead’s mailing list for advance knowledge of future outings or check out this Blog.

CLUB NIGHT NEWS 23.9.10

ASSIGNMENT M’BRO!

Saturday 25th September

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO: the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough is former dockland now being re-developed. Of great interest to photographers, the area includes Anish Kapoor’s massive £2.5 million Temenos artwork, the Transporter Bridge, the Riverside Stadium and the modern architecture of buildings such as Middlesbrough College with its highly reflective cladding. There are still areas of dereliction, some of which with colourful hoardings, and large tracts of wasteland covered at the moment with golden dry grasses and, separately, a rather nice, yellow-flowered weed variety. You will still see industrial heritage remnants and the two famous, abandoned ships are still moored opposite the Stadium.

DIRECTIONS: From the A19, take the A66 turn off towards Middlesbrough. Shortly afterwards, take the turn off sign-posted Transporter Bridge and continue following signs for that. Shortly before the Bridge, there is a right hand turn at the end of which you will see a large, red-brick clock tower which is our meeting point. Alternative routes: take the Transporter Bridge! Or park in the Riverside Stadium car park (OK on non-match days) and walk across the swing pedestrian bridge for Temenos and the College.

MEETING: by the clock tower which is between Temenos and M’bro College. The aim is to meet there at 10.00 am. Post code is TS2 1AD. Free parking is often available in the road leading to Temenos, or in the College car park adjacent to the clock tower.

LUNCH: will be in the Lord Byron pub which is the other side of the College from the clock tower.

Organiser: Colin Armitstead, colinarmstead@tiscali.co.uk

CLUB NIGHT NEWS 16.9.10

WILL CHEUNG COMES TO TOWN

As announced last week there will be an exciting extra event in the programme: a lecture by Will Cheung FRPS on Saturday morning, 13th November in the Council Chamber at County Hall. Many members will remember previous momentous occasions here: the Harry Holder Lecture by Dean Chapman and the digital processing demonstration by Barry Beckham. It will be free to members and is made possible because of the thriving membership of the club in recent times. Because space is finite it will be an all ticket occasion and therefore members need to put their name down for one. There is a list at the club or, if you cannot get in over the next couple of weeks, email Paul: rtcp4@aol.com

www.williamcheung.co.uk

Found by Stephen Byard in Dunstanburgh.

I was staying in Bamburgh a few weeks ago, and went to Dunstanburgh early one morning. I met a photographer who was from the Durham area, using a 5x4 camera (and Velvia). I didn’t get his name. He cycled from his car at the golf course end, but on the way back, dropped a tripod – I picked it up and have it here I’ve asked some 5x4 users I know about LF photographers in Durham, but they don’t know of anyone. They kindly posted this info on a “Large Format” forum. Does anyone in the club know them? You might want to announce this at the next meeting, just in case anyone know who I am on about.

Contact Colin or Tony.
